Children Based Naturopaths
Most people hear the word naturopath and think of herbs, supplements, or “alternative medicine”. It is this… and it is so much more. At its core, naturopathy is about understanding how the body works as a whole system to figure out why symptoms are happening, and making sure we address the root cause without suppressing symptoms.
A children’s naturopath is an investigator for deeper causes and imbalances that are contributing to the child’s symptoms, in a way that’s age-appropriate, gentle, and realistic for families. Children aren’t small adults. Their nervous systems, immune systems, gut, hormones, and brains are still developing, and they respond very differently to stress, illness, food, sleep and their environment. Through detailed questioning (of the parent, and the child dependent on age), we look at how all of those pieces interact and how they might be contributing to symptoms.
Parents usually consult us when something continually comes up and they’re not getting clear answers from other avenues in the healthcare system. Things like ongoing tummy pain, constipation, reflux, eczema, allergies, recurrent infections, behavioral or emotional challenges, sleep issues or concerns around focus, anxiety or sensory sensitivities. Without generalising, these parents can be told everything is ‘normal’ on paper or they’ll grow out of it… but this story doesn’t quite fit for them.
We slow down, listen, and take the time to zoom out so that a bigger picture can begin to form. In our day, we spend time taking a really detailed history. This includes pregnancy and birth, early feeding habits, antibiotic use, illnesses, sleep, diet, stress at home or school and development. All of this matters because kids bodies often show stress through physical symptoms rather than words.
From there, we consider what functional testing may be appropriate so that we can determine physical facts and figures, patterns which tell more of the story so we can address that root cause. This may include looking at how gut health affects immunity, skin, mood, and behavior. How mineral status (and heavy metals) can impact speech development, meltdowns, or anxiety. How poor sleep can drive inflammation, attention issues, and emotional regulation problems. None of these things exist in isolation and our job is to dig for you.
Once we have investigated, what we do is fairly straightforward and practical. We could recommend nutrition changes (food is our number one medicine!), gentle supplementation that is age appropriate (considering the individual for example in ASD we opt for tasteless where possible), nervous system regulation strategies, sleep support, and herbal medicine where required. We are individualising supplementation because every child is different in what they require. Our goal certainly isn’t to give a child a long list of supplements, but to support their body so it can do what it’s meant to do more easily.
Another big part of the role is education. Helping parents understand what’s going on, what’s normal, what’s not, and what’s actually worth worrying about. That clarity alone can take a huge weight off families who’ve been feeling stuck or second-guessing themselves. Importantly, children’s naturopaths don’t replace GPs or paediatricians; We work alongside them. Medical care is essential, especially for acute illness, diagnosis, and anything serious and urgent. Naturopathy fills the gap where conventional medicine often doesn’t have the time or framework to explore things like diet, lifestyle and prevention.
The point of seeing a children’s naturopath is to ask deeper questions earlier, support the body while it’s still developing, and hopefully prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones down the track. For a lot of families, it’s honestly just about finally having someone listen properly, put the pieces together, and help in a way that actually works. We are here to help parents understand their child better, supports the foundations of health, and works with the body to optimise health in all aspects, to allow their child to thrive; It’s as simple as that.
