Steroid creams - Symptomatic Relief Only?

Steroid creams - Symptomatic Relief Only?

Steroid creams can be very useful in the short term for eczema. They reduce inflammation, calm the immune system, and help itchiness of the skin which can reduce tearing of skin barrier. When used properly, they can make the skin look normal and give families some relief, which is why they are so heavily prescribed… They work, and they work fast!

That being said, they do not at all address the underlying causes of why eczema is showing up in the first place. Eczema isn’t just about inflamed skin; it’s about a complex mix of genetics, the skin barrier, immune function, the microbiome, and environmental or food triggers. Using steroid creams can temporarily suppress the inflammation, but it doesn’t repair the barrier or address what’s causing the immune system to overreact. Research shows that in people with eczema, the skin barrier is often compromised, it loses water and lets irritants, allergens and microbes in. That’s part of why flare-ups keep happening.

Steroid creams reduce inflammation but don’t fix that leakiness. The skin might look better while the cream is on, but as soon as you stop, the triggers are still there. The itch returns, the rash comes back, and it can often feel like a never-ending cycle of “cream, rash, cream again.” In all of this, it is paramount we assess immune system, of which certain pathways can be overactive. Steroid creams quiet them down temporarily, but they don’t retrain the immune system. That’s why long-term remission usually requires more than just creams. As a naturopath, we consider things like restoring the skin barrier, supporting the skin (and gut) microbiome, and addressing triggers (food, stress, detergents, climate, or environmental irritants).

So, in short: steroid creams are like a band-aid. They calm the fire temporarily, but they don’t repair the skin barrier or reset the immune system. Long-term management is about building the skin’s resilience, reducing triggers, and supporting immune and microbial balance, so flare-ups are less frequent and less severe. The key message is that steroid creams are not failing, they are a band aid (and just a small part of a bigger picture). The goal isn’t just to calm the rash down, it’s to reduce how often it comes back and improve the skin’s overall health. Eczema isn’t “just a rash”, it’s a systemic issue showing up on the skin.
